The French Lentil + Leek Crumbles meat substitute has just been recalled by Daily Harvest, the vegan meal delivery service well known for its pre-made smoothies, bowls, and flatbreads, after numerous customers claimed serious health problems associated with consuming it.
When the plant-based crumbles were consumed, several people complained on social media of a variety of gastrointestinal problems, including excruciating stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and even liver damage.
One user reported that their wife was hospitalised after "having symptoms consistent with serious liver problems" in a Reddit thread with approximately 150 comments.
According to a Twitter user, he had to have his gallbladder removed while in the hospital due to high liver enzyme levels, fever, chills, backaches, and jaundice.
On the Daily Harvest website, the lentil and leek crumbles, which were introduced in April, are currently marked as "Temporarily Discontinued."
The plant-based company stated in its most recent announcement that it had "started a study to discover the core cause of the health concerns being reported.
Along with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), microbiologists, allergists, and toxin and pathogen specialists, Daily Harvest claimed to have solicited their assistance.
Although all pathogen and toxicological test findings have so far been negative, we are still conducting rigorous testing and will keep you informed. In a June 22 post, Daily Harvest stated.
On June 17, the meal delivery service sent clients an email advising them to discard the crumbles "out of an excess of caution" and providing a $10 credit for each bag of the product bought.
Daily Harvest encourages people who have been harmed to make a report or email the brand at email@example.com even though the FDA has not yet officially issued a recall. Customers will also be given refunds.
